Masterpiece Festival long carve

... and the EXQUISITE CORPSE!

Vote for your favorite, Smiling optional!

The Shenandoah Valley Invitational  Chainsaw Challenge is a chainsaw carving festival /contest of carving wood with chainsaws. This mini festival of the chainsaw will take place over the last three days of the Shenandoah County Fair, August 28, 29, 30.  Four to eight chainsaw carvers will participate in three different overlapping events: Master Piece Carving, the Quick Carve Challenge and the Exquisite Corpse.

For the Masterpiece each carver will draw lots to select a 6’tall by 24” white pine log. They then have from opening day of the 28th till 3pm of Saturday of the festival to produce from that log what they consider to be their idea of what a chainsaw masterpiece should be.  Use of additional power tools, torches, paint will be allowed to being about the most finished product possible.

The quick carve challenges will start at 3pm on August 28 and continue every hour until day light permits. Carvers names will be randomly selected to go head to head in 15 minute carve off events the themes of which will be drawn randomly from a list provided by the carvers.  The audience will then be encouraged to root for their favorite. Immediately following pronouncement of a winner for the quick carve the carvings will be auctioned off.

The exquisite corpse is based on an old surrealist drawing exercise where a sheet of paper is folded over to create a division for each participant. The first person draws the head of a figure, and folds the paper over to hide what they have drawn, but leaving just enough edge visible so the second person can draw in the head and shoulders, and the paper is folded again to hide that from the next person.  We are going to do the same thing with a 6’ tall log. Each section will be hidden from the other participants carving efforts. The resulting figure will be revealed only on the last day of the festival.
